Description :
“We need to ensure education goes beyond literacy and numeracy. In today~s world, education must be about building peace, sustainable development, greater justice, social equity and gender equality.”
- UNESCO Assistant-Director General, Stefania Giannini
The United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda, which was established in 2015, has seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that must be met by 2030. Countries all over the world have pledged to take steps to achieve these objectives, including making energy clean and inexpensive, halting global warming, eradicating hunger and poverty, and establishing sustainable cities and communities.
We at the HDFC School, Pune has also adopted to following SDGs as part of our curriculum. Schools not only have the responsibility to create better societies through educating their students, but also to significantly improve the academic skills and wellbeing of their students. Students gain insight into crucial challenges around the world by learning about these projects, such as lack of access to clean water and gender equality. These concerns are inextricably linked to culture, and students must learn about the world around them in order to properly comprehend the SDGs.
With our programme we try our best to support this agenda and approach sustainable development holistically. This is how we, The HDFC School Pune are supporting the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and also promote environment, social and governance (ESG) principles aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals:
1. The school is being designed keeping in mind aspects of spaciousness, natural light, ventilation, and expansive greenery – all contributing to a healthy environment that blurs the boundary between outdoor and indoor spaces.
2. The HDFC School Campus promotes energy-saving activities and creative solutions to reduce energy usage in the classroom. All the classrooms are well ventilated and require less energy. All members of the institution collaborate to raise energy awareness and improve energy efficiency.
3. As part of environment, social and governance (ESG) principles, the school has Rain water harvesting system that helps in recycling water in an efficient way.
4. When students are introduced to crucial SDG subjects like poverty, hunger, and education, they gain a better understanding of the particular challenges that communities around the world face that they may not have been aware of previously. This knowledge promotes a sense of global connectedness and empathy for the entire planet. Empathy is required for students to have good relationships throughout their life. Students can launch community initiatives they are enthusiastic about or get active in local groups that generate change and connect our planet by transforming empathy into action-based compassion.
5. Students learn ways to lessen the environmental impact by including themes such as Sustainable Living, Waste Management, and Responsible Consumption into the curriculum. Students will learn how to value and protect their country~s cultural and natural heritage, as well as those of other countries, through supporting responsible behaviour on campus.
We promote use of the Sustainable Development Goals in learning so that children can contribute to a better future for all. Let us all contribute and make a better world for our children.
